— Welcome, I’m Alan
About the
Uncertain Philosopher
I’m just trying to make a better life for myself.
My life is pretty good but why not try make it better and make it last.
Hi. Thanks for coming to my blog. I started this blog to keep track of my attempts to improve my life. Hopefully, you will find some helpful hints and tips on improving your life here, too. But first, let me tell you a little about myself and my current situation.
My name is Alan and I’m 49 years old (as of April 2022). I was born in Ireland and have been living in Japan since July 2001. I lived in Yokohama for about 10 years and then moved to Okinawa where I currently live. Below are some details that are pertinent to this blog.

About Me
Here is some general information about me.
— 01
Family Status
I’m happily married with three daughters aged 13, 9, and 6. (Getting older every year.) My mother, two sisters, and brother all live in different countries.
— 02
Health Status
I got a clean bill of health at my last annual checkup. I eat reasonably healthily. I don’t smoke. I hardly drink. I exercise regularly.
— 03
Financial Status
I have a mortgage that is scheduled to be paid off in 29 years. That’s about the time I turn 80. So that’s not great. I have some savings but not enough to pay off my mortgage or put three young ladies through university.
— 04
Education Status
I have a B.A. in Accounting and Finance that I never used. I passed Level 2 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test in 2008, I think. I am currently studying for Level Pre-2 of the Kanji Kentei test.

Career Status
I have been teaching English in Japan since 2001 but I’m still not sure I could call it a career. I enjoy it. I run an affiliate business promoting pop culture t-shirts. I wouldn’t describe that as a career either.
— 06
Mental Status
I’m an optimist and generally a positive and laid-back person. (Self-assessment.) I do suffer from anxiety a little and that is definitely one of the reasons I started this blog.
